Founded: 1285

Tokeiji was founded by Kakusan-ni, the widow of Hojo Tokimune, the eighth regent to the Kamakura bakufu. Until 1871, the temple had the unusual status of an enkiri-dera, providing many women refuge from abusive husbands and enabling them to initiate divorce. husbands due to its unique status as an enkiri-dera, a temple where women could initiate divorce. The temple treasures include a standing figure of the Sho Kannon, an important cultural property, and divorce records from the Edo period. On the grounds, there are also steles associated with literary figures, including Masugi Shizue. Many literati are buried in the cemetery, including the painter Maeda Seison and the writer Kobayashi Hideo.
