We are just a few steps away from the bustle of Komachi Street, but it’s so quiet.
It feels like time passes more slowly here.
Imanishi Ayako, Curator, Kaburaki Kiyokata Memorial Art Museum
Welcome. Please immerse yourselves world of beauty created by Kiyokata and housed in this quiet space.
By the way, are you familiar with the novelist Higuchi Ichiyo?
Komachi
She is the one on the five-thousand yen bill, isn’t she?
Imanishi Ayako, Curator, Kaburaki Kiyokata Memorial Art Museum
Yes, she is. Kiyokata was a great fan of Ichiyo. The woman in this picture is Midori, the heroine of Ichiyo’s famous novel Child’s Play, and she is leaning on Ichiyo’s grave. Kiyokata conceived the painting on a pilgrimage to Ichiyo’s grave. Interweaving fiction with reality, this painting is Kiyokata’s masterpiece.
Komachi
Midori’s somber expression is impressive. It’s such a romantic picture.
Imanishi Ayako, Curator, Kaburaki Kiyokata Memorial Art Museum
We develop different themes to introduce Kiyokata, the person, and his works.
Since we change the displays every month, there is always something to look forward to.

Kamakura City Kawakita Film Museum

Kamakura Station area

Curator's recommends

Abe Kurumi, Curator, Kamakura City Kawakita Film Museum
Hello. My name is Abe Kurumi and I am a curator at the Kawakita Film Museum. The museum was built on the site of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kitakawa (Nagamasa and Kashiko), who contributed to the development of Japanese film. We exhibit film materials and organize screenings to tell the story of Japan’s film culture.
Shirasu
You screen films? That’s great.
What kind of materials do you have here?
Abe Kurumi, Curator, Kamakura City Kawakita Film Museum
A lot of materials are created when a film is produced. Everything from the script required for shooting the film, to posters, fliers, and other PR materials to promote the film, to stills that capture single scenes—these are all invaluable materials for understanding film.
Komachi
I see. So, you must have displays of old film posters!
Abe Kurumi, Curator, Kamakura City Kawakita Film Museum
The museum has displays of valuable European film posters that Mr. and Mrs. Kawakita brought to Japan before the war. We also have foreign film exhibits where we introduce wonderful poster designs by the graphic designer Noguchi Hisamitsu.
Komachi
Learning about the hidden side of film production sounds like fun!
We’ll come see a film on our next visit.

Look, there’s a dog house at the door! There’s a cuddly toy dog, too. How sweet.
Nagai Kana, Curator, Kita-Kamakura Yoh Shomei Art Museum
Hello,
My name is Nagai Kana and I am a curator at the Kita-Kamakura Yoh Shomei Art Museum.
The dog’s name is Jake and he is the main character in Yoh Shomei’s first picture book, The White Dog That Brings You Happiness.
Shirasu
What kinds of stories are there about Jake?
Nagai Kana, Curator, Kita-Kamakura Yoh Shomei Art Museum
Jake appears in several stories by Yoh Shomei and his adventures unfold in the sky, in the sea, and in space.
He is a recurring feature in Yoh Shomei’s picture books, which interweave fantasy with real social problems. Treasure the air, keep the sea clean, and don’t forget peace of mind… You can create all sorts of different worlds based on the gentle universe in the picture books.
Komachi
The colors of the original drawings are so beautiful..
Nagai Kana, Curator, Kita-Kamakura Yoh Shomei Art Museum
These gentle colors have a calming effect on everyone who sees them.
After the exhibition, I recommend relaxing at the museum while leafing through the picture books. We hope that you will enjoy some serene moments with the beauty of the original paintings and the inspiring texts.
Shirasu
There are so many! It's hard to decide which book to look at.
