SEKINE Shoji: A Retrospective

Sekine Shoji (1899-1919) lived through much of the turbulent period of Japanese history that was the Taisho era, before passing away at the age of just twenty. For the first time in twenty years, we present a retrospective of his work. Having taught himself to paint, Sekine became intoxicated by the culture of decadence before the influence of Northern Renaissance painting saw his own unique sense of coloration come into flower. His dreamlike paintings have a timeless quality to them. Here we present a section of rare oil paintings by the artist, as well as sketches and hitherto unseen letters, to gain a glimpse into Sekine’s world.
