Special Exhibition

The Dawn of the Shin-hanga

Ukiyoe, woodblock printings in the Edo era, were produced by collaboration of a painter, an engraver, a printer, and a publisher. In the Meiji era, Kiyokata and other illustrators created woodblock frontispieces in a similar way. And then, in the Taisho era, Ito Shinsui, Kawase Hasui, and Kasamatsu Shiro, the disciples of Kiyokata had started to produce Shin-hanga, new and artistic woodblock printings, with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo.
This special exhibition introduces woodblock printings including Shin-hanga by Kiyokata’s disciples, and Kiyokata’s works in the Taisho era and his woodblock frontispieces.
