    Kiyokata’s Tabletop Art : Small and Familiar World

    Kiyokata, originating from illustrator, loved to paint small and familiar works. He named such works “Takujo Geijutsu (Tabletop Art)”. This exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works and concept of Tabletop Art.

    Beauty in Winter

    After the Meiji era Restoration, adoption of western clothes for Japanese people had advanced slowly. From late of Meiji era to Taisho era, beautiful women in kimono on frontispieces or supplements of publication illustrated by Kiyokata or other painters entertained readers.
    This exhibition shows beautiful kimono-style for winter on frontispieces and raised clothes battledores inspired by Kiyokata’s work.

    Kiyokata’s Masterpiece “Tsukijiakashi-cho”

    Kaburaki Kiyokata’s masterpiece “Tsukijiakashi-cho, Tokyo” is one of the best in modern Japanese paintings and designated as a national important cultural property.
    This autumn, “Tsukijiakashi-cho, Tokyo” is coming to Kamakura together with “Shintomi-cho, Tokyo,” and “Hama-cho Gashi, Tokyo”. We are very pleased to offer the special opportunity to see these masterpieces.

    Kiyokata’s Early Works Leading to “Asasuzu”

    “Asasuzu (Cool of the Morning),” Kiyokata’s elder daughter walking in morning mist in summer, is one of the most popular works in our collection.
    This exhibition offers the opportunity to find attractive points of “Asasuzu” and to trace Kiyokata’s early career reaching this work.

    Analysis of Picture Scroll “Chosekiankyo” of Kaburaki Kiyokata

    The picture scroll “Chosekiankyo (Daily Life of the Common People in Downtown of the Meiji Period)” is one of Kiyokata’s masterpieces. It shows us the good old summer days Kiyokata loved.
    This exhibition focuses on “Chosekiankyo” to make you familiar with daily life in summer of the Meiji period.

    Bijin-ga, pictures of women, had been appearing in various medium such as original drawings, woodblock print, and commercial posters from the Edo period to the Showa period in Japan.
    This special exhibition shows common and timeless beauty of woman in various Bijin-ga from Meikyo collection.
