This exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works of winter scenery and decorative Oshie Hagoita (battledore) based on Kiyokata’s work.【Admission】

Kiyokata in the Taisho Period: Searching for the Expression of His Own

Around 110 years ago, beginning of the Taisho period, Kaburaki Kiyokata was turning into Japanese style painter from an illustrator. Receiving the highest award of Bunten, the government-run art exhibition in 1915 and producing other great works, he come to fame as a Japanese style painter. However, he had continued to search and develop his own potential of new creation.
This exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works in the Taisho period to trace his path of seeking new creation.【Admission】

The 170th Anniversary of Watanabe Seitei’s Birth Kiyokata and Seitei :Followers of Edo Painters

For full of witness and sophistication of his works, Watanabe Seitei (1852-1918) is attracting more attention in recent years. Kaburaki Kiyokata had also been attracted and influenced by Seitei’s works.
In cooperation with Prof. Yamashita Yuji, art researcher and expert of Watanabe Seitei, this exhibition introduces Seitei and Kiyokata’s works to find some similarity as followers of Edo painters.【Admission】

Beauty of Nihonga by Kiyokata and His Contemporary Painters

Kaburaki Kiyokata had developed his own painting style on the base of guidance of his master Mizuno Toshikata and by study of ukiyo-e. And furthermore, he had been stimulated and encouraged by contemporary painters.

Kaburaki Kiyokata grew up in a literary and narrative environment: his father, Jono Saigiku was a journalist and a fiction writer, his mother was a play-goer, and his grandmother had been reading out picture book to him. Well versed in literature and play, he had depicted many attractive characters and scenes from kabuki play or novel throughout his career.
This exhibition shows sensible literary and narrative world by characters in Kiyiokata’s works.【Admission】

In the Meiji period, common people in downtown Tokyo were familiar with theatrical entertainment as their pastime. Kiyokata also loved the theatre as a child.
When he was an illustrator, his illustrations and sketches on play magazines was well-received for his sharp observation and pertinent expression.
This exhibition introduces his works of beautiful flowery women on the stage with works expressed the New Year season.【Admission】

Refined Sentiment in Autumn and Winter with Kiyokata’s Works and Words

Japanese art, in its history, has been producing and developing by refined sensibilities to nature. Inspired by beauties of nature changing seasonally, Kaburaki Kiyokata created not only paintings, but also essay and haiku poem.
This special exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s paintings expressing sense of seasons from autumn to winter and haiku poem with materials shown to the public for the first time.【Admission】

Kiyokata’s Encounter with Kyōka: Invitation to Subtle and Profound Beauty

Kiyokata was an admirer of the novelist, Izumi Kyōka and had a close relationship with him. Undoubtedly, a certain part of Kiyokata’s art is influenced by Kyōka’s literary world. There are many illustrations, frontispieces, and cover designs for Kyōka’s books. What is more, there are some masterpieces of paintings such as “Chūmon-chō” based on his novel.
Commemorating the 120th anniversary of the encounter of two artists, the exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works and illustrations related with Kyōka and his literary world.【Admission】

Beauties in the Summer in Kiyokata’s Works

Although he was a well-known painter of beautiful women, Kiyokata got inspiration for his painting from the beauties of nature rather than women’s beauties. Above all, he love to paint summer features: indigo-dyeing yukata, windchimes, morning-glory and so on.

Kiyokata’s Deep Nostalgia for Daily Life in Edo, Tokyo

2021 marks 60 years since publication of Koshikatanoki which is the most important collected essays by Kiyokata Kaburaki who is also a prominent writer. Koshikatanoki is a compilation of essays and memoir of his boyhood and young adulthood. His description of culture, custom, art world as well as publishing world back then in these essays have been regarded valuable social and cultural references.
His essays carry the feeling of nostalgia and sorrow for Tokyo in Meiji period and it is reflected in his art works such as Choseki Ankyo that depicts daily lives of the common people around 1887.
This exhibition will introduce people and views of Tokyo in Meiji period in which the remains of Edo period were still found here and there along with Kiyokata’s essays.【Admission】
