    Transition of Women’s Beauty from the Edo Period: Meikyo Collection

    Bijin-ga, pictures of women, had been appearing in various medium such as original drawings, woodblock print, and commercial posters from the Edo period to the Showa period in Japan.
    This special exhibition shows common and timeless beauty of woman in various Bijin-ga from Meikyo collection.

    Attractive Heroines Kiyokata Loved

    Kiyokata loved literature throughout his life. He had painted the scenes and characters of the novels by Higuhi Ichiyo, Ozaki Koyo, or Izumi Kyoka so many times.
    This exhibition sheds the light on attractive heroines loved and painted by Kiyokata.

    In this exhibition, we introduce manners and customs of the year-end and New Year season in the Meiji era with Kiyokata’s paintings and essays.

    Romanticism and Poetry: Kaburaki Kiyokata and Nakazawa Hiromitsu

    Nakazawa Hiromitsu (1874-1964) was an oil painter, illustrator, and book designer. Kiyokata and Hiromitsu were contemporary and Kiyokata held him in high regard and owned his paintings personally.
    In this exhibition, you could meet two painters who had different art of painting and same feeling.

    Nihon-ga (Japanese style painting) has been developed and passed down for long time in Japanese culture and lifestyle.
    In this exhibition, we make the opportunity to discover beautiful and characteristic tastes of Japanese style paintings and learn the process of producing Kiyokata’s works.

    Kiyokata had spent the summer at his villa in Kanazawa, Yokohama with his family, friend and disciples.
    This exhibition shows joyful scenes of summer days, sea-bathing or hiking, in his works and picture diaries.

    Kiyokata and Two Disciples : Kadoi Kikusui and Nishida Seiha

    Kadoi Kikusui and Nishida Seiha had become Kiyokata’s disciples in their boyhood. They were the oldest disciples in Kiyokata’s private school and the closest disciples to their master.
    This special exhibition provides rare opportunity to show two disciples’ works with their master’s works.

    Bright and Beautiful Stages: Kiyokata`s Shibai-e

    Kiyokata loved shibai, theatrical play like kabuki and painted lots of shibai-e throughout his life. Beautiful costume, expression of players, and specific pose of dance — we could find his “theater-goer’s” points of view in his works.
    This special exhibition introduces his shibai-e depicts the scenes of kabuki play or dance like Dojo-ji or Nozakimura and illustrations for play magazines.

    Waiting for spring : Days of the New Year Painted by Kiyokata

    After the first seven days of the New Year, missing cheerful and busy holidays, Kiyokata was waiting for calm and warm spring.
    This exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works depict scenery of the New Year and decorative Oshie Hagoita (battledore) based on his work.
