Creation of Japanese Style Paintings by Kiyokata

Nihon-ga (Japanese style painting) has been developed and passed down for long time in Japanese culture and lifestyle.
In this exhibition, we make the opportunity to discover beautiful and characteristic tastes of Japanese style paintings and learn the process of producing Kiyokata’s works.【Admission】 Adlut ¥300

Happy Summer Days of Kiyokata’ｓFamily

Kiyokata had spent the summer at his villa in Kanazawa, Yokohama with his family, friend and disciples.
This exhibition shows joyful scenes of summer days, sea-bathing or hiking, in his works and picture diaries.【Admission】

Kiyokata and Two Disciples : Kadoi Kikusui and Nishida Seiha

Kadoi Kikusui and Nishida Seiha had become Kiyokata’s disciples in their boyhood. They were the oldest disciples in Kiyokata’s private school and the closest disciples to their master.
This special exhibition provides rare opportunity to show two disciples’ works with their master’s works.【Admission】

Bright and Beautiful Stages: Kiyokata`s Shibai-e

Kiyokata loved shibai, theatrical play like kabuki and painted lots of shibai-e throughout his life. Beautiful costume, expression of players, and specific pose of dance — we could find his “theater-goer’s” points of view in his works.
This special exhibition introduces his shibai-e depicts the scenes of kabuki play or dance like Dojo-ji or Nozakimura and illustrations for play magazines.【Admission】

Kiyokata`s Fond Look at Children

During the late of the Meiji period, as the publication for children issued one after another, Kiyokata had painted illustrations, frontispieces, and supplements of them. His works for children aren’t very well known.
This exhibition focuses on Kiyokata’s works painted children and illustrations of publication for children.【Admission】

After the first seven days of the New Year, missing cheerful and busy holidays, Kiyokata was waiting for calm and warm spring.
This exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works depict scenery of the New Year and decorative Oshie Hagoita (battledore) based on his work.【Admission】

Kiyokata is also well known as an excellent writer. He expressed natural features and events of each season, vanishing or changing with the times, by means of painting and writing.
This exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s words and paintings depict scenes of early spring.【Admission】

Kiyokata and His Disciples: The Art They Pursued

Around the end of Taishō period, Kiyokata had tried to paint actively shakai-ga, paintings capture various aspects of society, based on sketches of street scenes and everyday scenes of ordinary people. He also recommended his pupils to paint this shakai-ga.
This special exhibition focuses on the shakai-ga showing related Kiyokata and his pupils’ works.【Admission】

Kiyokata and Literature:Respect for Ozaki Kōyō and Friendship with Izumi Kyōka

Kiyokata and literature are deeply related. When he was a young painter, the literary group Ken-yūsha led by Ozaki Kōyō had extended their influence in the literary world. Acquainted with Kōyō and Izumi Kyōka, a promising young novelist of Ken-yūsha, Kiyokata paved his way to a famous illustrator. During his long career, he had produced many works inspired by literature.
This special exhibition shows a relationship of Kiyokata and Ken-yūsha with his works depicted scenes of novel or drama.【Admission】

Colors of Seasons : Illustration of Beautiful Women by Kiyokata

After WWII, Kiyokata painted cover illustrations of magazine Kuraku started and presided over by Osaragi Jiro with joy.
In commemorating the 50th anniversary of Osaragi’s death, this exhibition introduces works and materials related to Kuraku with works and frontispieces expressing summer feeling.【Admission】
