    Colored Autumn, Colorful Autumn: Beauty in Kiyokata’s Works

    Kiyokata painted beautiful women with sense of seasons. He enjoyed the autumn by hearing insects’ singing, seeing a rag of crowds in clear sky, and smelling the fragrance of chrysanthemums. His style is characterized by fine sense of appreciation of seasons.
    This exhibition shows the works conveying rich poetic sentiment of autumn.

    Kiyokata’s Summer at Kanazawa-Hakkei

    Kiyokata went to the villa in Kanazawa-Hakkei of Yokohama in the summer. And he did sea bathing and fishing with a family and spent happy time.
    This exhibition introduces the picture which Kiyokata painted beautiful nature of Kanazawa-Hakkei in addition to picture diaries when he stayed in the villa.

    Pure and Beautiful-Kiyokata’s Bijin-ga In Commemoration the 140 Years Since Kiyokata’s Birth

    Kaburaki Kiyokata, noted as a “bijin-ga” (paintings of beautiful women) painter, had painted throughout his life finding the beauty in womens’ elegant posture, graceful motions and beautiful kimonos.
    This exhibition traces transition of his expression of beautiful women.

    Portraits and Flowers by Kiyokata with Pleasures of the Seasons

    Kaburaki Kiyokata, a famous bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) painter was also good at painting portraits. This exhibition features his portraits and bijin-ga with seasonal flowers.

    Fantasy and Literature: Relationship between Kiyokata and Novelists

    Kaburaki Kiyokata had loved to read since childhood. And the exchange with famous novelists of his time, such as Izumi Kyōka and Ozaki Kōyō made him grow as a major illustrator. Even after becoming a Japanese style painter, he had painted the works based on a literature again and again. His deep affection for literature had enriched his art.

    Kiyokata’s Deep Affection to the Atmosphere of the Edo, Old Tokyo

     Kiyokata had strong memory in his hometown, downtown area of Tokyo. In this area, even after the opening the country, manners and customs of departed era had remained. The exhibition highlights his works depicting Tokyo in those days.

    Kiyokata’s Art Style “Tabletop Art”

     "Tabletop Art" is an art form proposed by Kaburaki Kiyokata in the Taisho period. It contains scroll paintings, picture books, or printed frontispieces and illustrations: you could enjoying to see a lot of details on your hands or on the tabletop. This exhibition features tebletop art and also shows Kiyokata’s works expressed the autumn.
