We commemorate the 120th anniversary of the death of a Japanese novelist, Higuchi Ichiyo.
Kiyokata loved Ichiyo’s works and painted various characters which appeared in those novels.
In this exhibition, you see mainly the Kiyokata’s paintings and illustrations inspired by Ichiyo’s and
the other novelists’ literature.
This exhibition shows mainly beautiful summer scenery in Kiyokata’s paintings and frontispieces.
His sketches, preparatory drawings and proof sheets are also exhibited and its making process is introduced.
This exhibition highlights Kiyokata’s early works of Japanese-style painting. Around that time,
he decided to change his job from a popular illustrator to a painter.
This thematic exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works, including one of his most important works Chosekiankyo (Daily Life of the Common People in Meiji Period), throughout his career
as a Japanese style painter.
Kiyokata had been pursuing consistently the beauty of women in his career.
The exhibition features his works from Kihara-bunko noted for its bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women)
