    The 180th Anniversary of Sanyūtei Enchō’s Birth: Kiyokata and Enchō, Recalling the Edo Period

    Kiyokata aged 13 was pushed by his father and a famous rakugoka (story-teller) Sanyūtei Enchō to become a painter. Young Kiyokata had learned a great deal from Enchō’s attitude toward his work.
    In this special exhibition, we introduce little-known relationship of Kiyokata and Enchō with Kiyokata’s paintings of theatrical culture.

    Kiyokata and “Kinreisha”, Neo-Japanese Style Paintings around the 1920’s

    “Kinreisha” was the group of promising Japanese style painters including Kaburaki Kiyokata, active from 1916 to 1922. Studying and creating freely, they had been stimulated and influenced each other to create neo-Japanese style paintings.
    This special exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s works around the era of “Kinreisha” and works of other members; Kikkawa Reika, Yūki Somei, Hirafuku Hyakusui and Matsuoka Eikyū

    Kiyokata’s Passion for Drawing and Painting

    Kaburaki Kiyokata is well-known as a Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) painter. But he also created various works such as outstanding potraits and paintings of theatrical play.
    This exhibition introduces his various art works from his youth up to his later years.

    Graceful Women by Kiyokata

    This exhibition shows the variety of women in Kiyokata’s bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women): women in prevalent fashion in the Meiji-Taisho period, the female characters in the literature and women in the Edo period as seen in Ukiyoe.

    The 110th Anniversary of Mizuno Toshikata’s Death Lineage of Beauty:From the Master to the Disciples

    Since Kiyokata was 13 when he had become Mizuno Toshikata’s disciple, he had deep respect for his master all his life.
    And Kiyokata also had initiated his disciples into the technique of paintings and the mental attitude when producing the art works as their master.
    This exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s lineage of beauty by showing the works of Kiyokata, Mizuno Toshikata, and Kiyokata’s disciples.

    The 145th Anniversary of Izumi Kyōka’s Birth: the Art of Kiyokata for Kyōka’s World

    Izumi Kyoka, who was a novelist born 145 years ago, had a close relationship with Kiyokata.
    This exhibition mainly shows Kiyokata’s works inspired by Kyoka’s novel and frontispieces for his novels.

    Colored Autumn, Colorful Autumn: Beauty in Kiyokata’s Works

    Kiyokata painted beautiful women with sense of seasons. He enjoyed the autumn by hearing insects’ singing, seeing a rag of crowds in clear sky, and smelling the fragrance of chrysanthemums. His style is characterized by fine sense of appreciation of seasons.
    This exhibition shows the works conveying rich poetic sentiment of autumn.

    Kiyokata’s Summer at Kanazawa-Hakkei

    Kiyokata went to the villa in Kanazawa-Hakkei of Yokohama in the summer. And he did sea bathing and fishing with a family and spent happy time.
    This exhibition introduces the picture which Kiyokata painted beautiful nature of Kanazawa-Hakkei in addition to picture diaries when he stayed in the villa.

    Pure and Beautiful-Kiyokata’s Bijin-ga In Commemoration the 140 Years Since Kiyokata’s Birth

    Kaburaki Kiyokata, noted as a “bijin-ga” (paintings of beautiful women) painter, had painted throughout his life finding the beauty in womens’ elegant posture, graceful motions and beautiful kimonos.
    This exhibition traces transition of his expression of beautiful women.
