Refined Sentiment in Autumn and Winter with Kiyokata’s Works and Words

Japanese art, in its history, has been producing and developing by refined sensibilities to nature. Inspired by beauties of nature changing seasonally, Kaburaki Kiyokata created not only paintings, but also essay and haiku poem.
This special exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s paintings expressing sense of seasons from autumn to winter and haiku poem with materials shown to the public for the first time.【Admission】

Kiyokata’s Encounter with Kyōka: Invitation to Subtle and Profound Beauty

Kiyokata was an admirer of the novelist, Izumi Kyōka and had a close relationship with him. Undoubtedly, a certain part of Kiyokata’s art is influenced by Kyōka’s literary world. There are many illustrations, frontispieces, and cover designs for Kyōka’s books. What is more, there are some masterpieces of paintings such as “Chūmon-chō” based on his novel.
Commemorating the 120th anniversary of the encounter of two artists, the exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works and illustrations related with Kyōka and his literary world.【Admission】

Beauties in the Summer in Kiyokata’s Works

Although he was a well-known painter of beautiful women, Kiyokata got inspiration for his painting from the beauties of nature rather than women’s beauties. Above all, he love to paint summer features: indigo-dyeing yukata, windchimes, morning-glory and so on.
The exhibition shows works and materials related with summer features of the good old days.【Admission】

Kiyokata’s Deep Nostalgia for Daily Life in Edo, Tokyo

2021 marks 60 years since publication of Koshikatanoki which is the most important collected essays by Kiyokata Kaburaki who is also a prominent writer. Koshikatanoki is a compilation of essays and memoir of his boyhood and young adulthood. His description of culture, custom, art world as well as publishing world back then in these essays have been regarded valuable social and cultural references.
His essays carry the feeling of nostalgia and sorrow for Tokyo in Meiji period and it is reflected in his art works such as Choseki Ankyo that depicts daily lives of the common people around 1887.
This exhibition will introduce people and views of Tokyo in Meiji period in which the remains of Edo period were still found here and there along with Kiyokata’s essays.【Admission】

Kiyokata and His Fellows: New Era for Young Painters of Ukiyo-e Descent

Kiyokata and his fellows launched small art study group Ugō-kai in 1901. They were working hard together to create new art suitable for the new era.
This special exhibition shows Kiyokata’s early works including Ichiyō Joshi no Haka (Grave of Higuchi Ichiyō) exhibited at the 5th Ugō-kai exhibition, and some works by other painters of Ugō-kai to trace young painters of Ukiyo-e descent by their works and materials.【Admission】

The Golden Age of the Woodblock Print Illustration

Colorful and elaborate woodblock frontispieces had appeared on the front page of books and magazines from the Meiji period to the early Taisho period. Kaburaki Kiyokata, as a popular illustrator, created many frontispieces and illustrations with carvers and printers in his youth.
This exhibition shows his beautiful works of woodprints and also works of the pioneers he admired.【Admission】

New Year’s Celebration in the Good Old Days

Kiyokata had painted so often the New Year’s scenes of the good old days, from the Meiji period to the Showa period.
This exhibition shows Tamesaruru Hi (Day of Trial) in which Kiyokata depicted the new year event in Nagasaki and other works and materials related to the New Year.【Admission】

The 120th Anniversary of Sanyūtei Enchō’s Death Mysterious and Beauteous World of Kiyokata and Enchō

Sanyūtei Enchō, very popular rakugoka (story-teller) in the late Edo period to the Meiji period, was Kiyokata’s father’s friend and also Kiyokata’s benefactor.
This exhibition sheds light on the relationship of Kiyokata and Enchō, showing a young Kiyokata’s diary on a journey with Enchō and a part of Enchō’s collection of pictures of yurei (ghosts).【Admission】

Kiyokata‘ｓ bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) attracts us by their KIMONO fashion as well as their feminine gesture or personal beauty. Based on his unflagging study, he painted various KIMONO of the Edo period to the age in which he lived.

Precious Memories of Summer at the Cottage Yūshin-an

Kanazawa in Yokohama had been famous for its beautiful scenery in the Edo period.
Since he got his cottage there in 1920, Kiyokata had spent calm and peaceful days in summer with his family and pupils.
This exhibition shows some picture diaries of his summer days at the cottage and Asasuzu, one of his masterpieces depicting beautiful summer morning around the cottage.【Admission】
