アンリ・オットマン(Henry Ottmann)は、1877年にフランスのロワール＝アトランティック県アンスニー村に生まれました。1904年にベルギーのブリュッセルで開催された「自由美学」に出品し本格的に画家として歩み始め、ブリュッセルやパリを舞台に活躍しました。市井の生活風景に好んで取材し、フランスのサロンアンデパンダン展をはじめ、サロン・ドートンヌ、サロン・デ・テュイルリーなどに出品を重ねていきます。ルノアールやセザンヌの影響を受け、印象派やフォーヴィズムを意識した作画に取り組んでいましたが、1927年に自動車事故により50歳で急逝しました。
オットマンの作品は、フランス人の画商・デルスニスが企画した「仏蘭西(フランス)現代美術展覧会」を通して広く日本に紹介されました。本作は、大正11年（1922）5月1日から31日まで農商務省商品陳列館で開催された第一回展に出品されたものです。
清方は会場で本作を一目観るなり、色彩の美に感動したといいます。また画面からは、幼い頃を過ごした築地の懐かしい海辺の風景が想起されたようで一層気に入り、会期中に買い求めました。以降、亡くなるまで手元に大切に置きました。

Henry Ottmann was born in 1877 in the village of Ancenis in the department of Loire-Atlantique, France. He worked in Brussels and Paris after launching his career as a painter in 1904 when he exhibited at La Libre Esthétique in Brussels, Belgium. He liked to paint scenes from daily life in the streets, and exhibited at many salons in France including Salon des Indépendants, Salon d’Automne, and Salon des Tuileries. His works were influenced by Renoir and Cézanne, and showed an awareness of both Impressionism and Fauvism. Ottmann died aged fifty in a car accident in 1927.
Ottman’s works were introduced to Japan through the Exposition d’art français contemporain (Exhibition of French contemporary arts) organized by the French art dealer Herman d’Oelsnitz. Cyclist and Fishing Boat was shown at the first exhibition held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce Shōhin Chinretsukan (Commercial Museum) from May 1 to 31, 1922.
Kiyokata saw the painting at the exhibition and was impressed with the beautiful colors. He liked it even more because it reminded him of the seaside landscape at Tsukiji where he spent his childhood, so he bought it during the exhibition and kept it with him until his death.
