昭和21年(1946)に腸チフスを患い入院を余儀なくされた清方は、退院後に視力が一時低下していました。友人の化学者・小竹無二雄(むにお)博士から、画業復帰への取り組みとして写生を勧められ、林檎や利根川の蜆(しじみ)、葉山の鯵(あじ)の干物など、身近なものを写しました。

In 1946, Kiyokata came down with typhoid fever and had to be hospitalized. After he was discharged, his eyesight worsened temporarily. Advised by his friend, the chemist Kotake Munio, Kiyokata drew everyday objects such as apples, clams from the Tonegawa, or dried horse mackerel from Hayama in an effort to return to painting.
