(First exhibited at the Shikokai Exhibition)

Around 1893, Kiyokata joined the Shoga Kenkyūkai (Society of Studying Calligraphy and Drawing) at the recommendation of fellow student Ōishi Masakata. The society was noted for having many members who combined creative activities with working in banks or government offices. Through it Kiyokata met and studied with Kodō Yamanaka and Fukunaga Kōbi. He also contributed pictures to its hand-drawn bulletin, Hikkashō. In 1897, when the Shoga Kenkyūkai changed its name to the Shikōkai, the bulletin was renamed Shikō.
Kiyokata’s maiden work, this painting was shown at the Shikōkai Exhibition at Kotobuki in Kagurazaka-shita. It depicts a blind street performer and a little girl walking along the canal at Fukagawa Kiba.
