烏合会では、展覧会毎に共通の研究課題を設けて各会員が制作しました。第12回展は「難福」が題目となり、清方は《曲亭馬琴》《水難樹上人物》のほかに本作を描きました。
修道女が家出した少女に教え諭しています。背景には、牧草地であった東京の巣鴨の景色が広がります。清方は当地に赴き、スケッチを重ねて秋の情趣を作品に取り入れました。

At the Ugōkai, members produced works based on a common research topic for each exhibition. The topic for their twelfth exhibition was fortune and misfortune. In addition to Kyokutei Bakin (Author) and Figure on Tree Suffering from a Flood, Kiyokata also painted this work.
A Caucasian nun admonishes a young girl who has run away from home. In the background, we see the open pastureland at Sugamo in Tokyo. Kiyokata visited to this location to sketch the atmosphere of autumn for inclusion in his works.
