お染久松ものの歌舞伎舞踊の上演にあたり、清方は舞台装置の意匠を手がけました。本作はそのための下絵です。
大川（隅田川）の中央に、待乳山聖天、左に浅草寺、右に筑波山が配されています。
油屋(あぶらや)の娘・お染と丁稚・久松は、叶わぬ恋の果てに心中しようと隅田川の堤にやってきます。猿まわしが思いとどまらせようとしますが、二人は死出の旅へと急ぎます。

Kiyokata designed the stage setting for Kabuki dance of the
Osome-Hisamatsumono featuring the tragic lovers Osome and Hisamatsu. This work is a preparatory drawing for the stage setting.
At center, Matsuchiyama Shōden temple overlooks the Ōkawa (Sumida River) with Sensōji temple to the left and Tsukuba Mt. to the right.
Osome, the daughter of the Aburaya money-lending house, and Hisamatsu, an apprentice there, arrive at the banks of the Sumida River intent on a love suicide. A performer with a monkey attempts to persuade them to give up the plan, but they hurry off to meet their end.
