Sakura Momiji (Autumn Color of Cherry Leaves) (1932)
color on paper; pair of two-folding screens
168.2 x 169.4 cm each
(First exhibited at the 3rd Shichigenkai Exhibition)

The Shichigenkai (Seven String Society) was an exhibition organized by the Mitsukoshi department store. The name is a reference to seven key figures in the Japanese painting world, including Yasuda Yukihiko, Kikuchi Keigetsu, and Kiyokata. The exhibitions were held from 1930. Later, the Shichigenkai developed a reputation for shaking up the art world.
This work depicts two sisters from a merchant household who have ventured far up a mountain path on a clear autumn day in the middle Meiji era. The woman on the left half of the folding screen has covered her head with an anesan-kaburi (a folded hand towel), and she is holding a kiseru smoking pipe in her hand. On the right, we see the back of her sister, who is sitting in the palanquin.
