明治34年（1901）11月に歌舞伎座で上演された「伽羅先代萩」を、清方はスケッチ帳へ場面ごとに写しました。これを『歌舞伎』104号に掲載するために、下絵として描いたのが本作です。
足利家の執権・仁木弾正(にっきだんじょう)（九代目市川団十郎）は、お家横領を企て若君の暗殺を謀ります。ところが密書が露見し、細川勝元（五代目尾上菊五郎）と渡辺外記左衛門(わたなべげきざえもん)（三代目片岡市蔵）に阻まれる、問詰所の場面が描かれています。

When the play Meiboku sendai hagi was performed at the Kabukiza in November 1901, Kiyokata sketched every scene. This is a preparatory drawing for a work that was published in issue 104 of Kabuki magazine.
The Ashikaga family regent Nikki Danjō (Ichikawa Danjurō IX) planned to take over the clan and to assassinate the young lord, but a secret document is discovered, revealing the plot. These sketches depict Hosokawa Katsumoto (Onoe Kikugorō V) and Watanabe Gekizaemon (Kataoka Ichizō III) thwarting Danjō at the Board of Inquiry.
