Kiyokata’s Deep Nostalgia for Daily Life in Edo, Tokyo

2021 marks 60 years since publication of Koshikatanoki which is the most important collected essays by Kiyokata Kaburaki who is also a prominent writer. Koshikatanoki is a compilation of essays and memoir of his boyhood and young adulthood. His description of culture, custom, art world as well as publishing world back then in these essays have been regarded valuable social and cultural references.
His essays carry the feeling of nostalgia and sorrow for Tokyo in Meiji period and it is reflected in his art works such as Choseki Ankyo that depicts daily lives of the common people around 1887.
This exhibition will introduce people and views of Tokyo in Meiji period in which the remains of Edo period were still found here and there along with Kiyokata’s essays.

Kiyokata and His Fellows: New Era for Young Painters of Ukiyo-e Descent

Kiyokata and his fellows launched small art study group Ugō-kai in 1901. They were working hard together to create new art suitable for the new era.
This special exhibition shows Kiyokata’s early works including Ichiyō Joshi no Haka (Grave of Higuchi Ichiyō) exhibited at the 5th Ugō-kai exhibition, and some works by other painters of Ugō-kai to trace young painters of Ukiyo-e descent by their works and materials.

New Year Celebration by Kiyokata

Kaburaki Kiyokata enjoyed various events of the New Year with his family and disciples. And he painted the manners and customs seen in the New Year in Japan which almost had been disappeared today. The exhibition shows Kiyokata’s works whose subject is the New Year or New Year season of the good old days.

The 80th Anniversary of Izumi Kyōka’s Death : Imaginary World Created by Kiyokata and Kyōka

Izumi Kyōka (1873-1939), died 80 years ago, is famous for his fantastic and romantic novels. Kiyokata was a keen reader of Kyōka’s novels and provided many illustrations and frontispieces for them. And he also painted Japanese style paintings based on Kyōka’s novels.
This exhibition features Kiyokata’s narrative works and a close relation with Kyōka.

Passing the Beauty from Kiyokata to His Disciples

Kiyokata had created his painting style by the study of traditional Japanese paintings such as ukiyo-e or Nanga and also the latest manners and customs influenced by western culture in the Meiji period.
Succeeding Kiyokata’s essence of beauty, his disciples carried out their creating activities in each way.
This exhibition introduces the interaction of Kiyokata and his disciples with Kiyokata’s bijinga (paintings of beautiful women).

Kiyokata’s Works in His Early Days

Kiyokata had started his career as an illustrator at 16. And then, he had become aspiring to be a painter. In 1901, he and his fellows formed the painting study group “Ugo-kai.”
This thematic exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s works in his early days including the frontispieces for books and magazines.

The 180th Anniversary of Sanyūtei Enchō’s Birth: Kiyokata and Enchō, Recalling the Edo Period

Kiyokata aged 13 was pushed by his father and a famous rakugoka (story-teller) Sanyūtei Enchō to become a painter. Young Kiyokata had learned a great deal from Enchō’s attitude toward his work.
In this special exhibition, we introduce little-known relationship of Kiyokata and Enchō with Kiyokata’s paintings of theatrical culture.

Kiyokata and “Kinreisha”, Neo-Japanese Style Paintings around the 1920’s

“Kinreisha” was the group of promising Japanese style painters including Kaburaki Kiyokata, active from 1916 to 1922. Studying and creating freely, they had been stimulated and influenced each other to create neo-Japanese style paintings.
This special exhibition introduces Kiyokata’s works around the era of “Kinreisha” and works of other members; Kikkawa Reika, Yūki Somei, Hirafuku Hyakusui and Matsuoka Eikyū

Kiyokata’s Passion for Drawing and Painting

Kaburaki Kiyokata is well-known as a Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) painter. But he also created various works such as outstanding potraits and paintings of theatrical play.

Graceful Women by Kiyokata

This exhibition shows the variety of women in Kiyokata’s bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women): women in prevalent fashion in the Meiji-Taisho period, the female characters in the literature and women in the Edo period as seen in Ukiyoe.
