Kanazawa Enikki V (Kanazawa Sketch Diary V) (1924)
ink and pale color on papers; Japanese book binding
24.0 x 30.6 cm each
Although the only damage to the Kanazawa villa in the Great Kanto Earthquake the year before was the loss of a single roof tile, the Suzaki area, where the Hotel Azumaya, where Kiyokata and his family had stayed many times, was located, suffered ground subsidence and the Hotel Azumaya collapsed. This diary includes sketches that show scars left by the earthquake at Isogo, which was en route to the villa. Kiyokata has also jotted down his thoughts on the people who died in the landslides.
Eighteen of the thirty-one sketches depict a sightseeing trip to Jinmuji temple at Zushi and nearby Mt. Takatori. Kiyokata has drawn some humorous sketches of the automobile packed with family members and pupils, the views from the summit at Jinmuji, and a party of three advancing through the rugged terrain of Mt. Takatori. The last sketch shows the figure of Kiyokata gazing at the planet Mars, which was in close proximity to the Earth that year.
