皇居周辺の桜田濠沿いにある柳の井戸の風情に取材した作品です。
柳の井戸は江戸時代から名水として知られ、絵入り地誌『江戸名所図会』（天保5～7年・1834－1836刊）の第四巻にも紹介されています。
清方は、長谷川雪旦が同書の挿絵として描いた、鷺の飛ぶ柳の井戸の風情を思い浮かべながら本作品を制作しました。

This work shows the Willow Well by the Sakurada moat in the vicinity of the Imperial Palace.
The well had been famous for its water since the Edo period. It was even included in Volume IV (1834-1836 edition) of Edo Meisho Zue, an illustrated guide to famous views of Edo.
Kiyokata produced this work while keeping in mind the scene of herons flying over the Willow Well drawn by Hasegawa Settan for the Edo Meisho Zue.
