Sōshun (Early Spring) (1918)

(First Exhibited at The 3rd Kinreisha Exhibition)

In 1916, Kiyokata, Kikkawa Reika, Yūki Somei, Hirafuku Hyakusui, and Matsuoka Eikyū set up the Kinreisha as an organization for the study of Nihonga (Japanese style painting). Seeking a new understanding of the Nihonga tradition and aiming to create a new style of Nihonga, Kinreisha’s activities influenced Kiyokata’s creative development in significant ways.
This painting incorporates some dress customs of the time: the shawl, the hair arranged in a chignon at the back of the head, the coat with its leaf pattern, and the modern hair ornament decorated with a plover. The pale glow produced by the application of urahaku gold foil to the back of the canvas, the violet shawl balanced against the yellow clusters of wisteria, and other uses of color and technique suggest that Kiyokata considered the effect the painting would have when displayed as part of an interior.
