The Kabuki Terakoya Picture Album (1899)
pale color on paper; album
8.6 x 26.7 cm each

Kiyokata made these sketches in March 1899 when the Terakoya (The Village School) act from the play Sugawara denju tenarai kagami (The House of Sugawara) was being performed as the second part of the program at the Kabukiza theater. The sketches on pages two to four of the album depict scenes from the first part of the day’s performance, the play Hachijin shugo no honjō (Eight Battle Formations to Protect Honjō Castle). Pages five to thirteen are drawings of scenes from Terakoya. In page eight, Kiyokata, who was interested in dramatic acting, depicted the figure of Matsuōmaru drawing his sword when he looks at the severed head of a boy brought to him for identification.
The following year (1900), Kiyokata started to produce illustrations for Kabuki magazine. In addition to sketches that convey the likenesses of the actors and the stage settings, he also illustrated articles of drama criticism and designed the covers.
