貴族の後庭での園遊会、女性たちが言う「結婚おめでとう」の言葉を鸚鵡(おうむ)が口真似をし、あたりに和やかな笑いが広がる場面が描かれています。着物には流行のアールヌーヴォー風の模様があしらわれ、指輪、首掛式時計鎖などの装飾品も細やかに配されました。さらに、主人公の女性の着物に「月」の字が桜の花びらで描かれ、満開の桜(花)と花吹雪(雪)とあわせて雪月花の意匠が構成されています。
清方は、本作品と同時期に『文藝倶樂部』の口絵としても《鸚鵡》を描いており、鸚鵡を用いた作画に意識的に取り組んでいたことがうかがえます。

The setting is a garden party at aristocratic residence’s garden. Everyone is laughing because they hear the cockatoo imitate the women by saying, “Best wishes!” The women’s kimono are decorated with fashionable patterns in the art nouveau style; their rings, clock pendants, and other ornaments are arranged with great attention to detail. The design for the composition also includes a reference to the setsugekka theme (snow, moon, and flowers) by combining the character for moon, outlined in cherry petals on the kimono of the central figure, with the cherry in full bloom and the falling cherry blossoms, which resemble snowflakes.
Around the time he painted this work, Kiyokata also produced Cockatoo, a kuchi-e (frontispieces) for Bungei club magazine, suggesting that he was deliberately working on drawings of the bird.
