Random Sketches of the Villa, Yūshin-an (1922)
ink and pale color on paper; accordion-folded album (sketch diary)
30.2 x 42.2 cm each
Kiyokata named the six-mat gazebo at his Kanazawa villa the Yūshin-an. Later, he started to refer to the villa itself as the Yūshin-an. This sketch diary contains seventeen sketches of daily events and the scenery around the house.
In addition to the path to the sea, the sky and the sea after a sudden evening shower, and a spring set within a thick grove of trees, Kiyokata sketched his family at the villa, a visit to the Hotel Azumaya, and himself on bed rest after suffering heatstroke. We catch glimpses of the affection between the family members in the sketch in which Kiyokata, wearing a straw hat, greets his wife and daughter on their return from a visit to the dentist in Tokyo, or the scene in which they watch the moon and talk together about how pleasant it would be to have visitors on such an evening.
